When Sri Rama decided to end his avatar mission and entered the stormy waters of the Sarayu River, a dog followed Him and His companions. When asked “why is she joining them?” She replied:
“I want to go to Heaven with you. In my past life, I was a real yoga, but I stumbled and left the righteous path of self-control, becoming a slave to vanity. I interpreted the Vedas, as my fantasy suggested to me – arbitrarily, but attractive to the audience, so I became such an animal that enjoys barking, biting and poisoning the victim. The people who then encouraged me with praise are now fleas and flies that nest on my skin, torturing me. Help me, Lord, to get away from this dishonor. I have already worked out my karma , I have served my sentence.
“These are the consequences of disrespecting the Vedas,” said Sri Rama, addressing his companions. – Study them with reverence and put into practice what they teach. Refusal to practice is already disrespectful.
