Alcohol Affects Your Body and Health | Drinking Alcohol and Its Effects on The Body

The dangers of alcohol have been known for a long time and, probably, to everyone. But nevertheless, structures interested in the sale of alcohol now and then “pour” into the Network information that small doses are even useful. Where does such information come from and is there at least a grain of truth in it – let’s figure it out.

The international medical journal The Lancet published the results of a study that there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink. Modern recommendations for reducing the risks of drinking do not take into account its effect on the brain, and it is he who suffers even from a small dose. At the same time, people with high blood pressure and body mass index, as well as those who drink alcohol uncontrollably, may be at increased risk of brain damage.

An earlier article refers to a 2016 study that tried to establish the level of alcohol consumption that minimizes a person’s risk. This level was 0 g of ethanol per week, which is largely due to the fact that the supposed protective effects for coronary heart disease and diabetes in women are offset by the possible occurrence of cancer.

If we talk about Russian-speaking researchers of the influence of alcoholic beverages, one cannot fail to note Fedor Grigorievich Uglov. F. G. Uglov is a Russian surgeon who, in his old age, performed the last operation. His age at that time was 100 years old. Among the last books of Fedor Grigorievich is a truly remarkable work – “The Truth and Lies about Legal Drugs: Alcohol and Tobacco”. In his book, he often refers to officially confirmed scientific facts about the dangers of alcoholic beverages.

The most informative is Angular’s description of the influence of alcohol on the human body, and its internal organs in particular.

Drinking Alcohol and Its Effects on The Body

Damage to the cardiovascular system

Usually, heart disease is observed in inveterate alcoholics. However, violations can be observed even after a single drink.

What are these damages? – Alcoholic hypertension and damage to the myocardium – the heart muscle. The myocardium is damaged as a result of the toxic effects of alcohol, as well as subsequent changes in the nervous regulation and microcirculation. In this case, a violation of interstitial metabolism develops, which leads to focal or diffuse dystrophy of the heart muscle. These consequences are usually manifested in cardiac arrhythmias and subsequent heart failure.

Damage to the nervous system

In his book, Uglov argues that alcohol is a paralytic poison that has a depressing effect on most of the nerve centers already at the very beginning of its action. As a result, a drunk person is disinhibited and liberated, he ceases to adequately assess what is happening, and sometimes does not even see the real danger.

A drunk person dulls the feeling of pain, he no longer feels tired, longing and worries leave him. And vice versa, there is a feeling of high spirits and inspiration. However, scientific facts prove that a drunk person does not become smarter or more developed; and if he thinks otherwise, then it is due to the influence of alcohol – the weakening of the higher activity of their brain. That is, as self-criticism weakens, self-confidence grows in a drunk person.

To a large extent and quite early, alcohol begins to disrupt the intellectual capabilities of people who drink often, their memory deteriorates. The tasks entrusted to them are carried out with difficulty and carelessly. Concentration is impaired, reaction time slows down. Drinking people quickly get tired when solving even simple issues.

Over the years, people who drink lose their ability to be creative, their circle of interests narrows, their interest in work and even family weakens. Deceit is the main feature of drinkers. The intellect of such people weakens so much that alcoholic dementia is possible.

Alcohol has a devastating effect on the entire body, but more on the nervous system.

The most dangerous effect of alcohol on a fragile children’s body. According to researcher I. N. Krakov, a child can die even from a few tablespoons of alcohol.

brain damage

Changes also occur in the substance of the brain – erythrocytes begin to stick together. And the stronger the drunk alcohol turned out to be, the more pronounced this process. In the brain, this happens as intensely as possible (because the concentration of alcohol there is higher), but this is what exacerbates the situation. The smallest capillaries in the brain are exactly the same diameter as red blood cells. And when red blood cells stick together, they clog the capillary.

Because of this, there is a cessation of blood circulation in the brain cell, and if it lasts more than 5 minutes, it is destroyed. If the concentration of alcohol in the blood is high, the process of gluing erythrocytes is most intense, which means that a large number of brain cells die.

In Sweden, researchers have found that after four years of alcohol consumption, the brain begins to shrink. Even in moderate drinkers, this process is inevitable. And even one drunk glass of beer leads to structural disorders in the body.

Damage to the visual apparatus

Drinking alcohol leads to visual impairment. Back in 1883, the researcher Rigde studied the effect of minimal doses of alcohol on visual acuity. He found that even after drinking less than 15 g of alcohol, vision became worse by 15%. During experiments conducted in 1903, it was found that from 26-45 g of alcohol taken the day before shooting, the number of hits on the target decreased several times.

Other researchers have studied the change in muscle strength levels after alcohol consumption. The measurement was carried out using an ergograph, a medical device for determining the dynamics of muscle performance. The researchers found that muscle strength decreased by 45% almost immediately after drinking beer.

As a result of the experiments conducted by Kraepelin, it was found that even minimal doses of alcohol inhibit and weaken the intellectual and social functions of the brain. Such violations are directly proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed.

If you take alcohol in large volumes, the work of not only the central nervous system, but also the spinal and medulla oblongata is disrupted. Perhaps the development of anesthesia and coma. If you drink from one to one and a half liters of alcohol, death will occur.

You can trace the dangerous effect of alcohol on the personality of a person who drinks alcohol for a long time. In such people, willpower disappears early, thought processes slow down, so they do not like to solve difficult life tasks. In especially severe cases, things can reach the point of complete stupefaction and insanity.

Stomach injury

The first place in the body that suffers from alcohol is the stomach. The greater the strength of the alcohol-containing drink you drink, the faster the disease of the stomach will develop and the more difficult it will be.

Alcohol causes disruption of all glands of the digestive tract. Glands located in the walls of the stomach produce gastric juice, which contains pepsin, hydrochloric acid and various enzymes necessary for the digestion process.

Under the destructive influence of alcohol, they first secrete a lot of mucus, and then become exhausted and atrophy. As a result, digestion is disturbed and food stagnates or undigested reaches the intestines. These changes cause gastritis, which, if left untreated, can lead to stomach cancer.

Liver damage

Passing through such a barrier as the liver, ethyl alcohol has a destructive effect on its cells, and they die. At the site of their destruction, connective tissue appears in the form of a scar. Connective tissue cannot perform the functions of an organ. The liver begins to shrivel, and the vessels in it are compressed, increasing the pressure several times. Under the influence of high pressure, the vessels rupture, leading to bleeding and possible death. This disease is called cirrhosis of the liver.

Another target for alcohol is the pancreas, where connective tissue also grows. In his book, Uglov describes autopsies of people in their 30s and 40s who drank alcohol uncontrollably. They were diagnosed with inflammation of the pancreas – pancreatitis.

Lethal dose of alcohol

Many diseases overtake people precisely through the fault of alcohol. They themselves may not be aware of this, but surgeons who operate on patients and pathologists who open them after death know for sure.

Alcohol, like other poisons, kills a person. Many experiments have been carried out to determine the minimum amount of poison per kilogram of body weight required to kill an animal.

Observations of human poisoning also made it possible to calculate the toxic equivalent for humans. It is 7.8 g per kg of weight. Slow consumption reduces the risks, but does not eliminate them. When a lethal dose is consumed, the body temperature first drops. Death occurs in half a day or a little more. If we recalculate for vodka, it turns out that the toxic equivalent is about one and a half liters.

Conceiving children while intoxicated

In the national census of the population of Switzerland back in 1900, about 10 thousand idiots were identified. The analysis showed that all of them are conceived, mainly during the grape harvest and at Shrovetide, when alcohol consumption increases. Thus, scientists have come to irrefutable conclusions: if parents conceive children in a state of intoxication, they give birth to children with mental disorders. At the same time, you need to be aware that with “cultural” drinking, the brain and reproductive organs are cleared of the effects of alcohol only after three weeks.

predisposition to alcoholism

It is difficult to say which of the “cultural” drinkers will eventually become an alcoholic, and who will be able to grow old “civilized”. But there is a way to determine a person’s predisposition to alcoholism. How does this happen? At the first stage of the study, a person determines the level of general nonspecific reactivity of the organism (UONRO) under the influence of a light beam, which has a temperature effect of a threshold force. People who have a minimum pain sensitivity threshold of 0.5–11 s, an average of 12–18 s, and a low level of 19–35 s are distinguished by a high level of general reactivity of the body.

At the second stage, a survey takes place to determine the retrospective self-assessment of the psycho-emotional and functional state of a person after the first acquaintance with alcoholic beverages. Information about the attitude of parents to alcohol consumption is also taken into account.

Thus, after analyzing all the data obtained, the risks of possible alcoholization of a person are identified: a pronounced risk, a moderately pronounced or no risk. .

It has been established that alcohol consumption among women is not systematic, but is situational, socially conditioned. At the same time, it was found that persons with increased sensitivity to pain, i.e., with a high level of general nonspecific reactivity of the organism (UONRO), are at the greatest risk of alcoholization. Also, the results of studies unequivocally indicate an increased risk of alcohol demand in the menstrual, follicular and premenstrual phases of the OMC (ovarian-menstrual cycle) in women who situationally consume alcoholic beverages.

For women who do not consume alcohol, the potential risk of demand for “legal” PASs became more important in the menstrual and premenstrual phases of the OMC.

Why do people drink? Surely it is no secret to anyone that they very often drink in order to drown their conscience either before doing something immoral or after it has already been done. That is, alcohol destroys our moral principles and foundations – something that over the years, on the contrary, should become stronger and more unshakable for our own good in the first place.

Another common reason for drinking is to relax. This begs the question: “Dear readers, how tired do you need to be to relax yourself with narcotic poison?”. Unfortunately, many young and sometimes adult people do not have an adequate alternative to such relaxation. Because parents relaxed with the help of alcohol, rested with the help of alcohol, holidays were celebrated by drinking alcohol. And, unfortunately, they had no other options.

Also, people often create the illusion of getting rid of problems with the help of alcohol. This approach is reminiscent of a child who sees something terrible and closes his eyes so as not to be afraid. This is a primitive instinct that acts as a self-defense in childhood.

Many adults, unfortunately, do exactly the same: a person has a problem, it is a task that needs to be solved. But! Partly due to his weak will, weakness of character, indecision and, in the end, laziness, he decides to close his eyes, that is, to skip a glass, another and pretend that there is no problem, and it’s not worth straining. On the one hand, a very wise approach is not to make an elephant out of a fly.

But this would be the case when a person looks at any problem solely as a problem that needs to be solved, without coloring it into various negative emotions such as want/don’t want, like/dislike, pleasant/unpleasant. He just takes it and solves the problem. But a drunk person has no problem. They come back in the morning… And unresolved problems, they are tasks, tend to accumulate, regardless of whether we want to see them or not. And it turns out a snowball of unsolved problems, which, like by the ears, attract more and more difficulties into our lives.

So, how can you motivate yourself to completely give up alcohol? First, realize all the harmful effects of alcohol on your body. The main aspects of this influence have already been outlined above. Who doesn’t want to be healthy? Everyone wants! But the extra health will give you extra energy, and if you don’t find a decent way to use it, you’ll drain it the usual way. That is, a person must have a goal in life, for which, in principle, he lives. Otherwise, why would a person need additional health and energy? Everything must be logically justified.

For example: “I live to maximize my potential, or to benefit people.” It can be any other purpose for which you simply wake up in the morning. If there is no such goal, perhaps it is time to think about it.

Next, observe the lives of people leading a sober lifestyle. Find an example for yourself to look up to. It is hard to stick to some ideas if you understand that you are one of a kind, and you don’t know what it will result in. And when you observe the lives of specific people, you see that their life goes on more or less adequately, without any terrible unpredictable incidents. Of course, everyone has some troubles, disappointments, but sober people cope with any problems more adequately, without negative consequences.

And in principle, try to surround yourself with like-minded people. Believe me, there are many such people. If there is no one nearby, search the Web, because the support of like-minded people at the initial stage is very important.

If you decide at some stage to give up alcohol, you will notice that your environment is unhappy about this. Perhaps they will ridicule you, call you a cultist, say that this will quickly pass, and you will again become “normal”, from their point of view. What can be said about this? We’ve all gone through this. Each in their own way, differently.

You need to be patient. You also need to understand that the people around you are afraid of change, not just do not want, but are afraid. So the problem is not with you, the problem is with them. This, of course, is only about those who will speak badly about your new lifestyle. Because for some this is not a problem at all, and with such people one can continue quite pleasant communication. But there will be those who will start to encourage the use of alcohol in various ways.

If you have the fortitude not to be led by these teasing, continue to communicate. Maybe with your will power you will transform this person too. But this is a very ideal one. Often it is still difficult for a person to stay on this path himself, not to mention inspire someone else. So be realistic. Do not drag the carrot by the tops, because of this it will not grow faster. Especially at the initial stage, be very careful with your words and advice to others.

No need to shout right and left that alcohol is a poison. First, accumulate your own experience of a sober life, make sure and strengthen yourself in it, and then you can record lectures or in another format unobtrusively talk about your personal experience without causing rejection from the outside.

And yet, the most powerful motivator on your part for others will be changes in your thinking and, accordingly, in your lifestyle. And this, as you know, is a slow process. Until then, unfortunately, your words for the environment will have little weight. Therefore, introduce this healthy habit into your own life, strengthen it, and then carry this healthy information into society. Be firm in your intention – and you will definitely succeed!
